Playing Quarterback: Delivering Standardization to Wound Care

Playing Quarterback: Delivering Standardization to Wound Care

Wound care represents a massive opportunity for health plans. According to an article in the International Wound Journal, successful wound treatments cost more than $50 billion per year in the U.S. Of that, Medicare spends between $28 billion and $97 billion a year to manage acute and chronic wounds.

Despite this massive spend, there are few evidence-based standards of care for wounds, which leads to inconsistent outcomes. An article in Advances in Wound Care states it well:

“While there are a myriad of topical therapies/antimicrobials and dressings available to the clinician, very few have prospective data to support their effectiveness in promoting wound repair.  Hence, clinicians tend to use what they are accustomed to or what seems to be effective based on personal experience.”

This idea is taken further during a recent panel discussion by experts at the American Journal of Managed Care, where physicians pointed to the need for standardization in wound care practices. It was noted that there are individual organizations that operate using their own system of best practices, but there is no cohesion between organization and clinicians. It can be best summed up:

“There’s no quarterback,” said Michael T. Kazamias, MS, DPM.

“If a plan exists in a forest but nobody can access it, does it exist?” said Peter L Salgo, M.D.

That’s where Esperta comes in.

Wound care clinics frequently use dressings and other supplies based on what is on hand. Home health agencies may apply the same treatments to patients regardless of wound type without appropriately changing the treatment plan as the wound condition changes. Esperta takes a different approach.

By delivering superior, concentrated wound care expertise from specialized physicians and nurses, patients can receive better outcomes and health plans can receive consistent results. Our Responsive Treatment Plans are developed utilizing wound healing guidelines. They are delivered in the most innovative, easiest, and accessible way for patients wherever they are.

We can bring standardization to wound care. At Esperta, we have developed wound care standards that are rooted in positive outcomes. We want to provide value to both the patient and health plan. It’s about delivering consistent results that drive change in the industry. It is expert wound care anywhere.
